Longtime Hamilton Township supervisor Alan Everett dies at 60
Longtime Hamilton Township supervisor, chairman of the Council of Governments and respected leader Alan Everett, 60, died Monday.
Everett, of Saylorsburg, served as supervisor since 1988 and as the board chairman. He also chaired the COG, a group of officials from each Monroe County municipality to work in cooperation on issues of mutual interest.
“He was the kindest man,” recently retired Monroe County Commissioner Suzanne McCool said. “He always had time for me for questions about government. He was a gentleman.”
County Commissioner Charlie Garris had known Everett for 40 years.
“He’s always a happy-go-lucky guy. We were sometimes on opposite sides of the issue but he was always a congenial kind of a person,” Garris said.
Commissioner Chairman John Moyer noted that Everett always had the best interest of his township at heart. “It’s unfortunate; a great guy.”
McCool named Everett her backup in the county’s continuity of government plan if she had died in office.
"He had a nice leadership manner. He’d get down to business and keep the meeting short. He wanted people to have time to socialize, and that’s really important — for people from different townships to get to know each other so they work better together.”
Everett was also active in the Monroe County Agricultural Preservation Program, Hamilton Township Planning Commission, Monroe County Planning Commission, Pennsylvania Association of Council of Governments, Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors, Pennsylvania State Board for Certification of Sewage Enforcement Officers, Monroe County Tax Collection Committee and the Monroe County Litter Control and Beautification Board, according to his obituary.
Services have not been scheduled yet. Those interested in making a donation in Everett’s memory can give to the Animal Welfare Society of Monroe County or a charity of one’s choice.
