On Saturday July 23rd 2016 Evelyn Santiago, 51 of Effort called her home to let her husband Raphael (who recently had knee surgery and is a Veteran) and two of her five children (ages 13 and 18) know that she was on her way home.

Evelyn was driving her 2013 Kia Sorrento south on Evergreen Hollow Rd at approximately 12:39 am when she apparently went off on the shoulder of the road while negotiating a right curve and struck a tree.

Sean Tiernan and his friend Seamus came upon the scene and seeing that the vehicle was filling up with smoke broke a rear window to let the smoke out of the vehicle and called 911 while Sean's friend worked on getting the rear door open.

Sean explained to them that Evelyn's lips were blueish and he wanted to tilt the drivers seat back and perform CPR, but the 911 operator instructed him to do nothing which turned out to be a very good call as Evelyn suffered from a broken neck upon impact and moving her could have resulted in her instant death.

At this point Evelyn's family was getting concerned that she had not arrived at home yet so her 18 year old went out to find her, she arrived at the scene after all the emergency personnel (West End Volunteer Fire, West End Ambulance and State Police) were already on scene.

West End Ambulance transported Evelyn to Pocono Medical Center were they called for a Helicopter to transport Evelyn to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest.

State Police confirm that Evelyn was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

Because of Sean Tiernan and his friend Seamus's quick thinking that night, Evelyn's family both local and out of state had precious time to speak to her, hold her hand and say everything they wanted  before she passed away Monday night.

Evelyn and Raphael have been married for 21 years and have 5 children the youngest is 13 years old.

There will be a Memorial for Evelyn on Friday at 4:00 pm at the American Legion in Gilbert (Army Tank between Queen of Peace Church and the West End Fair Ground).
