On May 23, 2017, at approximately 9 p.m. Corrections Officers at the Monroe County Correctional Facility began an emergency lockdown of the C-Unit due to an altercation involving up to 15 inmates.
The Monroe County District Attorney's Office Detectives were notified and conducted an investigation into the incident and circumstances leading to the altercation. The investigation, conducted by Monroe County District Attorney detective Michael Kreischer determined the following:
Fred BAUMGARTNER had a confrontation with RAVENELL over usage of the phones in the day area of the C-Unit. BAUMGARTNER reported that he was approached in his cell by Patrick PLAYER and Regulus HOYT. PLAYER and HOYT are associates of RAVENELL. All three inmates were ordered out of the cell by a corrections officer. Numerous inmates began to circle around BAUMGARTNER and started punching and kicking him. BAUMGARTNER defended himself in the assault and bit and struck other inmates. BAUMGARTNER was treated for multiple abrasions and contusions. A bite mark was identified on the right thigh of PLAYER.
MCCF Corrections Officers assisting in the investigation identified inmates involved in the altercation by reviewing security footage recorded by the MCCF surveillance system.
As a result of the investigation criminal charges have been filed with the office of District Judge Jolana Krawitz. RAVENELL, PLAYER, STRICKLAND, WHITE, MEDINA and HOYT will have preliminary hearings before Judge Krawitz. Dayquan SALAMAN who has since been transferred to federal prison will be returned to Monroe County to face his charges.
