A bicyclist was thrown into the windshield of a 2012 Hyundai Accent during a crash Friday in Ross Township, State Police Lehighton said in a statement.

Both bicycle and car were headed south on Route 115 at 1:52 p.m. when a 2004 Toyota Tacoma traveling north crossed into the opposite lane. A third vehicle with its turn signal on had stopped in the northbound lane while it waited to turn onto Mountain Road.

The Toyota was traveling fast when the crash happened, police said. It crossed a double yellow line to pass the stopped car on its left side. The Toyota’s driver-side front bumper hit the Hyundai on the driver side, causing it to strike the bicycle’s rear wheel.

The bicyclist — who had been traveling on the southbound shoulder — was thrown onto the hood of the Hyundai and into the windshield. She was then ejected onto the west side of the southbound lane.

Police have not released any names, but the statement identifies the bicyclist as a 52-year-old woman. She was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Pocono by West End Ambulance with suspected major injuries.

The 19-year-old man from Windsor, New York who drove the Hyundai had been wearing a seat belt, said police. He transported himself to LVH-Pocono for suspected minor injuries. His vehicle was towed from the scene by Karl’s Towing.

The Toyota driver — identified as a man, 31, from Ashley — had also wore a seat belt. The police statement does not indicate he sustained any injuries.
