PSA: Move Over, It’s the Law
Did you know Pennsylvania, along with almost every other State in the United States has a Steer Clear "Move Over" Law?
The Steer Clear law in Pennsylvania requires drivers to move over or slow down when approaching a traffic stop, emergency responders, or disabled vehicle.
Emergency responders can include: police officer, sheriff, deputy sheriff, coroner, deputy coroner, firefighter, fire police, fire marshal, medical examiner, deputy medical examiner, rescue personnel, ambulance personnel, towing and recovery personnel, highway maintenance and construction personnel, hazardous material response team member or emergency medical service personnel.
Penalties under the Steer Clear Law include: a fine of up to $250 for failing to move over or slow down, doubling of fines for other traffic violations occurring in emergency response areas, & 90-day license suspension if violation results in injury to workers.
The law applies any time an emergency vehicle has its lights flashing and where road crews or emergency personnel have lighted flares, posted signs or tried to warn motorists.
If law enforcement is not present at the time, the law allows road workers and emergency responders to report violations by motorists. Citations can then be issued by police based on these reports.
